Atlantic Corporation (Atlantic Packaging) of Wilmington, North Carolina, announced today a definitive agreement to purchase International Paper’s three largest paperboard converting facilities in Greensboro, N.C., Hazleton, P.A. and Sturgis, M.I.
Atlantic has 12 branch locations across the Southeast U.S., Dominican Republic and Central America and employs 750 people. The Wilmington, N.C. based company is a nationwide packaging products and equipment supplier to consumer products manufacturers, with paper converting facilities (similar to those acquired from IP) in several current locations.
“This is a real game changer for our family company,” said Rusty Carter, Atlantic President.
“Overnight this gives us a major presence for all of our business segments in the Southeast, Northeast, Midwest, and soon the Southwest, with a planned new facility in Dallas, giving us full a national footprint. That is big for everyone at Atlantic. It makes us national in every way.”
“We enthusiastically welcome the IP employees to Atlantic and look forward to the many opportunities ahead for all of us. It is an honor for us to be working so closely now with our long time supplier IP. They are one of the world’s premier paper producers.”
The acquired IP facilities convert (sheet and rewind) bleached paperboard produced primarily at IP mills in Riegelwood, N.C., Augusta, G.A., and Texarkana, T.X. The sheeting plants serve as finishing departments and distribution centers for national product coverage.
Greg Gibson, Vice President and general manager of coated paperboard for International Paper said, “Atlantic Packaging is a leading paperboard converter with a great reputation for quality and service. This transaction offers considerable marketplace advantages for both companies.
“International Paper gains significant supply chain flexibility to support our Carolina® and Everest® brands and job opportunities for our employees in three facilities.
“Atlantic Packaging gains incredible talent and expertise along with an expanded manufacturing system and marketplace presence in their core converting operations.”
Carter further commented about the announcement, “Being so closely aligned with a Fortune 500 company like IP is truly exciting for our small company. We have worked with IP for years but this acquisition places us is in a very strong position to support our common customers and streamline the entire supply chain.”
After the purchase, Atlantic will employ over 900 people and will be the largest converter of bleached paperboard in North America.
Atlantic began in the small town of Tabor City, N.C. in 1946 as a weekly newspaper and has grown into one of the top 25 privately held companies in North Carolina.
Founder W. Horace Carter won the Pulitzer Prize in 1952 for an aggressive newspaper campaign with the Tabor City Tribune against the Ku Klux Klan. Carter died in 2009.

The Atlantic Packaging Fitbit Challenge is complete and the results are truly astounding.
630 Pounds Lost!
And so much more…
Our goal in implementing a wellness program was first and foremost to benefit our employees and encourage health and wellness. We felt that by keeping the well-being of our employees at the forefront of the challenge and ensuring that they were getting real benefits from the program, they would experience ongoing, long term, potentially life changing health benefits.
Some of the Fitbit program requirements at Atlantic Packaging included participating in a 6-month walking challenge, meeting with a health coach, participating in biometric screenings, and keeping records of their exercise and eating habits.
The amazing health improvements we saw as a result of the Fitbit Challenge included employees who quit smoking; employees who never exercised before who were now running their first 5K, 10K and even Half Marathons; employees with high triglyceride levels who were cutting those levels in half; employees who changed their diets and exercise habits for the better.
Employees lost weight, improved their overall health, feel better, look better, and have more energy. This challenge has been a great success for Atlantic Packaging employees and for the company as a whole.
“The Fitbit program has not just changed my routine, it’s changed my life.” — Rosalind Allen, Reception
Another huge benefit of the program was the grand prize, a 2014 Jeep Wrangler! A huge congratulations to our grand prize winner, Marian Mercer. Watch the Fitbit Challenge Jeep Giveaway Winner Announcement – Live.
The health and wellness program we implemented has truly been a huge success and we are so excited about the dedication and commitment to lifelong good heath from our employees.

Atlantic Vice President of Paper Converting, Geoff Searcy, discusses the recent expansion of the Charleston Paper Converting Facility. In this one location, Atlantic is converting more than 4,000 tons of paper and paperbaord each month. Between three plants, Atlantic is converting well over 100,000 tons annually with the capacity for up to 130,000 tons.
Here are some of the recent additions to the Atlantic Paper Converting operation:
- Added Digital Sheeter – this one scales down to an 8.5″ x 11″ size on paper and paperboard
- Expanded Large Format Capabilities – installed equipment that can do a 60′ x 100′ sheet to cut off
- Added Embossing Equipment – this can put a linen finish or textured finish on either paper or paperboard
- Added a Laminating Machine – this can paste two sheets together for paper to paper, paper to board, board to board, and films to board.
The quality control at Atlantic is driven by the need to exceed the expectations of both demanding suppliers, whom Atlantic is representing, and demanding customers serving large, international industries including pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetics. Both the supplier side and the customer side will conduct audits of Atlantic facilities to ensure that processes comply with quality quality guidelines.
Atlantic Converting is investing in the expansion of the Charleston facility due to the proximity with major paper supplier Kapstone and the Port of Charleston. These are key elements in the success and growth of our converting operations.
