For many operations, tape is treated as a commodity. The conversation centers on price per roll, while larger sources of cost often go unnoticed.

The reality is that case sealing affects far more than packaging spend. Tape usage, seal quality, downtime, product damage, rework, and labor all influence the true cost of getting products safely to customers. The Guardian Taping System from Atlantic Packaging is a data-driven approach designed to reduce tape consumption, improve seal integrity, and increase packaging-line performance without requiring a capital investment in new equipment.

Revisiting the Price per Roll Approach

When the focus for taping operations is on negotiating a lower price per roll, the much larger costs associated with material waste, downtime, rework, damaged products, and inconsistent seals can be overlooked.

Guardian takes a different approach. Instead of concentrating solely on tape pricing, the program targets a reduction in tape consumption through optimized application and ongoing monitoring.  Customers can achieve a 10-20% reduction in tape usage while realizing more predictable annual savings than traditional price-driven purchasing strategies can provide.

The result is a shift from buying tape as a commodity to managing case sealing as a performance-driven process.

Proving Savings Before Implementation

One of the most valuable aspects of the Guardian Taping System is its emphasis on measurable results.

Before implementation, we evaluate a customer’s existing case-sealing process alongside the Guardian system on the same production line. Tape usage and seal integrity are measured side by side, and the findings are documented in a report that projects annual material reductions, cost savings, and reductions in at-risk cases.

This audit provides a clear understanding of where savings opportunities exist and establishes a baseline for ongoing performance monitoring.

Rather than asking manufacturers to take savings claims on faith, Guardian validates them with operational data.

Built to Improve Performance

The Guardian Taping System combines engineered equipment with real-time monitoring to help improve the consistency and reliability of case sealing operations.

At the center of the system is the PrimeLoc™ Tape Head, which uses multiple flexible wipe-down points to maximize adhesive contact, reduce tape waste, and improve seal quality. By right-sizing tabs and reducing common application issues such as wrinkled tape and long tails, the system helps minimize rework and unplanned production interruptions.

The system’s PrimeAlert™ monitoring technology provides notification of sealing faults, including missing tape, broken tape, improper seals, depleted rolls, and other system issues. Optional PLC integration can even stop out-of-spec cases before they move further down the line.

Together, these technologies help support a primary operational goal shared by nearly every manufacturer: increasing machine uptime.

Technical Partnership

The Guardian system can be retrofitted to more than 300 machine models in approximately 20 minutes or less. Installation, operator training, ongoing maintenance support, and a wear-parts program are part of the service model.

This technical partnership helps reduce the burden on internal maintenance teams while ensuring case-sealing equipment continues to perform as intended.

Supporting Source Reduction Goals

As Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) legislation expands across the United States, packaging teams are facing increasing pressure to reduce material use while maintaining package performance. Material efficiency is becoming both an operational and financial consideration.

Guardian supports these efforts by helping companies reduce tape consumption through optimized tab lengths, improved application efficiency, and access to high-performance tape solutions suited to a variety of packaging environments.

For organizations pursuing sustainability goals, source reduction often represents one of the most practical and measurable ways to reduce packaging impact while also lowering costs.

The Total Cost of Ownership Advantage

Case sealing may seem like a small part of the packaging operation, but its impact extends throughout the supply chain.

By combining engineered equipment, monitoring technology, technical expertise, and data-backed validation, Guardian helps manufacturers move beyond tape procurement and focus on what matters most: lower total cost of ownership, stronger seals, increased uptime, and meaningful source reduction.
